What are the key components to being a successful manager? What skills can I develop to enhance my abilities to get the most out of staff and advance the Member’s goals? Most important, how do I know if I’m doing well?

In this 90-minute program, House managers will conduct their own self-assessment using a CMF-developed survey instrument detailing 37 qualities and skills of a successful manager in Congress. Participants will identify their strengths and weaknesses in communications, interpersonal, and analytical skill sets; determine which of these skills are important for their jobs; and develop a plan for improvement. The session will include:

  • Private self-analysis of each participants’ management and leadership skills (your own assessment will not be shared with others);
  • Discussion amongst participants of challenges to managing staff in congressional offices and how to overcome them;
  • Development of action plan for each participant on how to enhance their skills to improve office operations and performance.

This program is open to:

  • House Chiefs of Staff
  • House Deputy Chiefs of Staff
  • House Legislative Directors
  • House Committee/Subcommittee Staff Directors
