Please join the Congressional Management Foundation (CMF) and the Society for Human Resource Management (SHRM) for a discussion of workflex. Participants will gain insights into:

• Why is workflex important for Congress? Learn what congressional staff had to say about their work-life and how it impacts their job satisfaction and retention. These key findings are from the comprehensive CMF-SHRM "Life in Congress" research project, based on a survey of more than 1400 congressional staff.
• How does workflex benefit employees AND employers? This portion will provide an overview of workflex in the private sector, including comprehensive findings from the 2014 National Study of Employers.

ABOUT THE PRESENTERS

The program will be led by Lisa Horn and Bradford Fitch. Lisa is Director of Congressional Affairs at SHRM and serves as the Co-Leader of SHRM's Workplace Flexibility Initiative. She is an expert on workplace flexibility trends and research, and is a former congressional staffer. Brad, CMF's President and CEO, has extensive consulting and teaching experience both at CMF and at American University where he served as an adjunct associate professor. Brad worked on Capitol Hill for 13 years and previously edited Setting Course: A Congressional Management Guide.

The "Life in Congress" Project is a partnership between the Congressional Management Foundation (CMF) and the Society for Human Resource Management (SHRM) to examine Congress as a workplace. Its goals are to improve the effectiveness and efficiency of Congress and to enhance the public's understanding of Congress by conducting research with Members and staff.

To achieve these objectives, CMF and SHRM surveyed a random sample of Members of the House of Representatives and surveyed all House and Senate personal office staff. More than 1,400 staff and 25 Members of Congress participated in the research. The resulting data was published in three reports on the work-life of House Members, the work-life of congressional staff, and the job satisfaction and employee engagement of congressional staff. This briefing is the first of four programs hosted by CMF and SHRM on the topic of workflex in Congress.
