Event: Advocacy Leaders Network - Modern Congress, Modern Advocacy

PROGRAM OVERVIEW

In the first months of this new Congress, we've seen legislators bombarded with messages from constituents. And what method has gotten the most media attention? Phone calls (delivery device invented 1875). But in 2017, is using 19th century technology really the most effective? Organizations may have a veritable treasure trove of potential advocates and tools to connect them to lawmakers, but if they use what is "easy" to contact Congress, instead of what's "effective" what impact will it have?

This event will explore what 'Congress 3.0' looks like, and how MoCs prefer to be reached. A panel of Capitol Hill staffers will shed their light on the inner workings of their office and constituent communications and by the same turn, a panel of practitioners will share the most creative ways they've reached Capitol Hill. Join us in learning how to meet this paradigm shift of the political world with a new approach to advocacy. Our speakers include:

  • Brad Fitch – President & CEO, Congressional Management Foundation
  • James Braid – Deputy Chief of Staff, Office of Rep. Ted Budd (R-NC)
  • Wilsar Johnson – Digital Director, Office Rep. Bonnie Watson Coleman (D-NJ)
  • Caty Borum Chattoo – Director, Center for Media & Social Impact, American University
  • Michael Lewan – Director of Government Relations, The Recording Academy
  • Mike Panetta – Partner, Beekeeper Group
