Congressional Management Foundation Honors Schneider with Staff Lifetime Achievement Award

WASHINGTON, D.C., June 22, 2018 – The Congressional Management Foundation (CMF) today announced that Judy Schneider of the Congressional Research Service (CRS) has won the first annual Democracy Awards Lifetime Achievement Award for congressional staff.

The Lifetime Achievement category of the Democracy Awards recognizes two Members of Congress and one staff member who have had a significant, positive impact on the management and operations of the institution of Congress during their careers.

As a specialist at CRS and an adjunct scholar at The Brookings Institution, Schneider has educated hundreds of Members of Congress and their staff on the rules of Congress in her 42 years on Capitol Hill. In 2015, Women in Government Relations created the Judy Schneider Fellowship in recognition of her decades of service mentoring thousands of women through her "Direct Connect to Congress" series.

"Judy Schneider has had a profound and valuable effect on hundreds of congressional staff and Members of Congress in her four decades of service to the Congress," said Bradford Fitch, President and CEO of the Congressional Management Foundation. "There is no other person more deserving or qualified for this inaugural award for lifetime achievement,"said Fitch.

In addition to Schneider, CMF also recognized four finalists for lifetime achievement:

  • Theresa (Teri) A. Gullo; Assistant Director for Budget Analysis, Congressional Budget Office
  • Chuck Kleeschulte; Senior Professional Member, Senate Energy and Natural Resources Committee
  • Janet Qureshi; Director of Case Management, Rep. Kevin Brady (R-TX)
  • Tracee Sutton; Legislative Director, Sen. Heidi Heitkamp (D-ND)

At the ceremony, CMF will also recognize the previously announced Democracy Awards Lifetime Achievement winners in the Member of Congress category, Rep. Steny Hoyer (D-MD) and Senator Rob Portman (R-OH). It will also honor Members of Congress and staff who are finalists and winners in four categories: Constituent Service, "Life in Congress" Workplace Environment, Transparency and Accountability, and Innovation. The winners in these categories will be announced on July 2. Winners and finalists will be honored at an awards ceremony on July 13.

The Founding Partner for the Democracy Awards is the Bridge Alliance, which provided a generous grant to launch the program. Bridge Alliance is a diverse coalition of more than 80 organizations committed to revitalizing democratic practice in America.
