Providing Professional Development for Members

For many years CMF has been publishing Setting Course: A Congressional Management Guide and Keeping It Local: A Guide for Congressional District and State Offices to help Senators, Representatives, and their staffs set up and manage their operations. These publications have guided thousands of offices from day one in strategic management and decision-making, constituent service and engagement, and understanding the ins and outs of the unique workplace that is Capitol Hill.

More recently, at CMF's encouragement, the Select Committee on the Modernization of Congress adopted a recommendation that the House of Representatives provide professional development opportunities for Members of Congress. As a starting point, the House worked with CMF to develop a podcast series with guidance from former Members of Congress on a range of topics of interest to many current Members. Using our long view of which former Members of Congress used practices that should be models for their current colleagues, we worked with the House to create "The Exemplary Member."
